Important Auto Maintenance

When maintaining a car, preventative care can go a long way in avoiding costly repairs or replacements in the future. But while regular maintenance can help keep your car performing at its best, it’s also a critical step in staying safe while on the road. Make sure you aren’t ignoring these three major tasks as you service your car or truck on a regular basis.

Schedule a Brakes Check and Service

A problem with your brakes system could lead to serious consequences with little or no warning. Obtain a brake service quote from a local mechanic and schedule a visit every 10,000 miles, or as often as you change your oil. In addition to searching for signs of damage or serious wear, your brakes specialist can remove excess rust and buildup from components as well as apply necessary lubrication and tighten loose parts.

Keep Up With Oil Changes

How often you change your oil depends on your vehicle, the age of the engine and the type of oil used. Synthetic motor oils are more expensive, but tend to last longer than traditional options. Consult your owners’ manual and your trusted mechanic to determine the proper oil and appropriate frequency and stay on top of your oil change schedule. Be sure to choose a location that includes additional checks with an oil change, such as checking filters and all other fluids, as well as rotating and inflating tires. It’s especially important to rotate your tires at every oil change to promote even tread wear.

Check and Replace Lights and Wipers

Dim or poorly functioning headlights, taillights and signal lights can cause reduced visibility while driving. They could also lead to a collision without the ability to properly warn other drivers of your presence and movements. Replace burned out bulbs immediately and keep the lenses clean for improved function. Maintain your headlights every so often by removing layers of buildup with a headlight restoration kit. In addition, swap your windshield wiper blades for a new set every six months or at the first sign of streaks, scraping or skipping. Not only can this dangerously reduce your visibility during inclement weather but it can also cause permanent damage to your windshield.

Keep your car safe on the road and in top shape by scheduling regular maintenance for your brakes, oil and tires. Never neglect signs of a developing problem, and address the little details, like lights and wipers, to keep your car in its best condition and to protect you while you’re in the driver’s seat.
